[8/8 Mon] Korean, The Language for People
The title of the lecture : 미국에 처음 도착한 한인들은 자녀들에게 한글을 가르쳤을까? Did Koreans who first arrived in the U.S. teach Korean to their children?
한글에 관해 우리 학생들은 과학적이고 창의적이며 체계적인 문자로 만든 일자, 만든 사람, 만든 이유가 있는 유일한 문자라고 알고 있다. 그 중에서 이번 캠프에서는 배우기 쉬운 문자와 애민 문자 그리고 세계로 널리 퍼지는 문자인 한글에 관해서 공부해 보고자 한다. 전 세계로 널리 흩어져 사는 한인들이 다른 나라에 가서 처음 시작한 일도 바로 자녀들에게 한글을 가르치는 일이었다. 캘리포니아 주에서는 한글날을 기념일로 지정했고 유네스코에서는 유네스코 세종 문해상을 수여하고 있다. 다른 나라에서는 한글을 차용하여 그들의 말을 적는 경우도 있고 최근에 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 한글 단어가 많이 등재되었다. 이런 내용들을 우리 코리안 아메리칸 학생들이 알고 자랑스러운 한글을 널리 알리고 퍼트리는 일을 담당해 주기를 바라고 있다.
Regarding Hangul, Korean students know that it is the only text that has a scientific, creative and systematic date, creator, and reason for making it. In this camp, we are going to learn about Hangul, which is an easy-to-learn character and which is widely used around the world. Koreans living widely around the world teach their children Hangeul. The state of California has designated "Hangeul Day" as an anniversary, and UNESCO has awarded the UNESCO Sejong Literature Prize. In other countries, Hangeul was often borrowed to write down their words. Recently, many Korean words have been listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. We hope that our Korean American students will be in charge of knowing and spreading the proud Hangeul.
[8/9 Tue] Hanbok, Clothes of Wind
The title of the lecture : BTS가 공연에서 입은 한복, 미국에서는 누가 언제 한복을 입지? BTS, a K-pop boy band, wore Hanbok at their concert. Who else presented Hanbok widely in the U.S. and when?
한복은 한국인의 고유한 의복으로 1600여년간 이어져 왔다. 긴 시간에 걸쳐 한복에는 예로부터 전해져 오는 한국 사람들의 생활 양식과 지혜가 깃들어 있다. 한복의 특징을 이해함으로써 타민족과 다른 한국인의 문화적 특징을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 요즘에는 한국 문화 열풍과 세계화에 더불어 한복은 한국에서만 그치지 않고 전 세계적으로 뻗어나가고 있다. 따라서 세계에서, 특히 우리가 살고 있는 미국에서 한복의 위상을 살펴보는 것 또한 중요할 것이다. 이에 따라 이번 캠프에서는 “한복과 나”, “한복과 코리안의 문화적 정체성”, “오늘 그리고 여기 미국에서의 한복”에 대해서 생각해 보도록 한다.
Hanbok has lasted for more than 1600 years as traditional Korean clothes. In Hanbok, there is the Korean lifestyle and its wisdom accumulated for a long time. By understanding the characteristics of Hanbok, you will be able to discover the characteristics of Korean different from other cultures as well. These days, it is spreading out not only in Korea but also around the world due to globalization and the popularity of Korean culture. Thus, it is important to understand the status of Hanbok in the world, especially in the U.S. where we live. In this camp, we are going to think about “Hanbok and I”, “Hanbok and Korean cultural identity”, and “Hanbok in the U.S.”.
[8/10 Wed] Hansik, Food of Five Colors
The title of the lecture : 옥스포드 사전에 등재된 한국음식들, 친구들에게 어떻게 소개할까? Oxford English Dictionary listed several Korean foods. How would you introduce Korean foods to your friends and neighbors?
예로부터 한국은 지리적인 이점으로 여러가지 재료를 구하기 쉬워 다양한 음식 문화가 발전하였다. 한국인들의 인사말이나 속담을 보면 예로부터 음식을 중시하는 문화가 있었음을 알 수 있고, 비빔밥과 같은 한국 음식은 건강식으로 여러 나라에서 인기를 얻고 있다. 이번 캠프에서는 한국 고유의 전통 음식에서부터 세계로 퍼지며 변화하는 한국 음식, 그리고 세계 여러 나라에서 사랑받는 한국 음식에 대해 알아보고자 한다.
Since ancient times, Koreans could obtain various ingredients easily due to its geographical advantage, and Korea has developed a diverse food culture. If you look at the greetings and proverbs of Koreans, you can see that there was a culture that emphasized eating, and now Korean food, such as bibimbap, is gaining popularity in many countries as a healthy food. In this camp, we would like to learn about traditional Korean food and uniqueness, Korean food that spreads and changes around the world, and Korean food that is loved by many people around the world.
